James Cook University Conference – Agarwood: “The Wood of the Gods” lucrative tree crop for the wet tropics of North Queensland

The fragrant resin-infused wood of the Aquilaria tree has been used by people since antiquity, but only since natural resources have been exhausted in recent times have people thought about growing it. Production of agarwood in North Queensland has the potential to reduce harvesting pressures in the wild populations and provide a potentially lucrative crop to diversify the agricultural landscape. Species background and the research and development work undertaken at JCU for agarwood will be presented.
